If you love the holidays, your home is probably filled with seasonal decorations, lights, the delicious scent of cookies baking or turkeys roasting, and other festive signs of the season. Another consistent element of the holiday season in November and December is guests. You may be hosting out-of-towners for an extended period, or you may be having dinner parties, cocktails, or just a few friends dropping in for coffee and gingerbread. Whatever your entertaining plans, your guest bathrooms, whether a powder room or a full en suite bath for overnight visitors, should be as cheerful as the rest of your home. Follow these tips for a fun and sparkling bathroom.
Keep Plenty of Supplies Available
Make sure you have backup supplies on hand of:
- Soap
- Hand sanitizer
- Toilet paper
- Tissue
- Air freshener
If you want to go the extra mile for your guests, especially if they’re spending the night in your home, here are a few nice extras to have for them:
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
- Dental floss
- Mouthwash
- Hand lotion
- Body lotion
Leave a drawer empty for your overnight guests to stash their bathroom supplies, and have a couple of hooks on the bathroom door for robes, pajamas and toiletry kits.
Light it Up
Bathrooms need great lighting all year round, but a little extra boost of brightness can’t hurt in the dark winter months. Clean your fixtures and dust your lightbulbs. Now is a good time to up the wattage a little bit if you think it’s needed. Get some battery-operated lights and put them in a glass jar to add some fun, and this can also act as a nightlight for visitors.
Splurge on Special Towels
Chances are everyone who comes to your home will visit the powder room, so get some pretty, luxurious hand towels for guests to use. If you expect a lot of guests, pick up some beautiful paper hand towels, too—they’re a little more sanitary for large crowds. Choose a holiday theme for either one to add some festivity to your powder room.
If you’re hosting overnight guests, it’s a great excuse to buy some new towels that are soft, fluffy, and pretty. There are always sales before Thanksgiving, so keep an eye out for promotions at your favorite big box or department store. Make sure you have plenty of towels for everyone, including hand towels and washcloths. If you want to opt for holiday-themed towels, all the better!
Add a Fragrance for the Season
Whether you choose a diffuser, a spray, a candle or potpourri, adding a holiday-themed scent to your guest bathroom is a nice touch. There are a wide variety of options available, including:
- Cinnamon
- Sugar cookie
- Pine
- Pumpkin
- Hot chocolate
- Vanilla
If you expect to have a lot of children around, stay away from candles and opt for diffusers or sprays instead to reduce any worry of little fingers getting singed or worse.
Use Holiday Decorations to Add Some Fun
There’s no reason to skip sprucing up your guest bath or powder room with holiday-themed decor. Hang some lights, add a glass bowl filled with colorful balls or ornaments, put out your favorite assortment of dreidels, or replace your bathroom art with images of sleigh rides, Christmas trees, or anything else that makes you feel in the holiday mood. You’ll enjoy it, and your guests will, too.
