Custom Pantry Shelving Solutions and Ideas

What Are Pull-Out Shelves?

Pull-out shelves are a great addition to any pantry. Since most pantries are deep and probably dark, pull-out shelves solve the problem of having to empty everything every time you need a specific item that isn’t visible and stashed in the back of the shelf. Pull-out shelves are installed on slides with rollers. Have a professional install them if you are not handy so they work smoothly and safely.

Small Pantries

Small pantries in small kitchens require a lot of creative thinking and good organization. Bins, baskets, and clear boxes are your best tools for keeping your pantry and kitchen storage space under control and not repeatedly buying the same thing over and over that you already have on hand. Keep your label maker nearby when you get started organizing your small pantry, and throw out anything that’s past its “use by” date, or donate foods to a local homeless shelter or food pantry that you know you’ll never eat.

Corner Pantries

A corner pantry takes the place of traditional cabinets in your kitchen, allowing for floor-to-ceiling storage in what would otherwise be out-of-reach cabinets. What you give up in counter space with a corner pantry you more than make up for with a place to store large bulk items and rarely-used small appliances. Create a space for the large items like cases of beverages so you don’t have to lug them up from the basement or in from the garage. If you use baskets or bins, be sure to label them with what’s inside to keep from needing to take down two or three to find what you need.

Walk-in Pantries

If you are lucky enough to have a walk-in pantry, make the most of all of that space! Think of a large pantry as a kitchen annex and not just a place for storing food. Use the space to make room on your kitchen counters to do prep work and serve meals.

Some storage options for large pantries include:

  • Wine rack
  • Bookshelves for cookbooks
  • Task lighting
  • Open shelves
  • Large spice rack
  • Vertical slats for serving trays and baking sheets
  • Coffee station
  • Over-the-door additional storage

Basement Pantries

A basement pantry can range in size from a small closet to the entire basement, depending on how the homeowner chooses to use the space. If you want to use the basement for a large amount of storage, divide the basement into zones. For example, if you can your own jams and other items, keep those all in one part of the basement, along with the equipment needed. If you like to have a lot of paper goods on hand, keep them together in another part of the basement. Have shelving built to house all of your pantry storage items. As large as a basement pantry may be, it can still become a disorganized and unmanageable jumble of items if you don’t maintain it with care.
