Say Goodbye to the Junk Drawer With These Organization Hacks - Art of Drawers

Say Goodbye to the Junk Drawer With These Organization Hacks

Just about everybody has a junk drawer in their home, filled with things they’ll use from time to time, but one that’s incredibly cluttered. Actually, “junk drawer” might not be the best name – something like “stuff drawer” would probably be a more accurate term, but it doesn’t have the same ring to it. Anyway, if you have one it’s probably a disorganized mess. It could be in your bathroom, your pantry, or anywhere else. There’s a good chance you have more than one.

If you’re tired of having to wade through your junk drawers every time you need something like a battery, an extra phone charger, a pen or anything else, the experts with Art of Drawers have some solutions. If you would like to get in touch with us to learn more about how we can help, just contact us online or give us a call at (770) 800 8410.

Get Rid of Anything You Don’t Need

Even though there are a lot of useful things in your junk drawer, there’s also probably a lot of, well, junk. Your first step in organizing this drawer should be to toss whatever you know you’ll never use again. If you’re planning on decluttering your home anyway, this would be a great place to start.

There could be some highlighters that don’t work any longer, or a tablet charger that only fits in a device you discarded a long time ago. There might also be some old batteries, or even gift cards that are empty.

While you’re at it, here are a couple of other decluttering tips to consider for the rest of your home.

  •  Find a place for overflow – Just like in your junk drawer, there are going to be items that you might not necessarily use on a regular basis, but that you know you don’t want to throw away. This is a great time to identify areas where you can put this extra stuff. One thing you might not have thought of is the areas underneath your sinks. These could be perfect spots for new drawers.
  • Take stock of all your storage space – Are you maximizing every bit of the available storage space in your home? You might be able to add some shelves to a bathroom wall instead of artwork. Sure, the art looks great, but it’s not really that practical. If you’re running out of space to put things, some extra shelving could really come in handy.

Find New Homes for Everything Possible

Again, there’s probably quite a bit of stuff in your junk drawer that’s still useful – just not to you. If you know someone who could use some of the items in the drawer, give them away. If there are things you want to hold on to, see if you can find another place in your home for them. For example, you might have forgotten there were a couple of screwdrivers in there. That’s simple enough – just put them back with the rest of your tools.

Do you keep receipts and any other paperwork in that drawer? Maybe I could put them in a plastic slider bag and keep them in a laundry room cabinet instead. You might be surprised at how easier this will make it to not only navigate the junk drawer, but to find that paperwork as well.

Categorize the Remaining Items

So, now that you’ve thinned out a lot of what was in the junk drawer, how do you go about organizing what’s left? One method to consider is grouping those items into categories. This really isn’t as involved as it might seem. All you need to do is empty out the drawer and put similar items in separate piles. For example, put pens and highlighters in one pile, phone or device chargers in another, paper clips in another, and so on.

Use a Drawer Divider to Break up Unrelated Items

This is where your plan will really start to come together. Art of Drawers has drawer dividers available in a wide range of sizes. Whether you’re organizing a bathroom, kitchen or pantry junk drawer, dividers will make finding things a breeze.

Take the bathroom, for instance. Bathroom drawer dividers will make it easy to locate razors, brushes, scissors and anything else you need. By separating the drawer into different zones, you’ll find everything in a snap.

Use a Two-Tiered Drawer if Needed

If you have so much stuff your drawer is still overflowing, maybe you need an extra drawer. A drop-down drawer could be the perfect solution. This could be especially helpful in the kitchen. Drop-down drawers can give you extra space so that you can find your cooking utensils a lot faster than you normally would be able to do.

Label Everything

If you have a small space where your junk drawer is located, every bit of organization will help. It might sound like overkill, but labeling the different sections of your drawer will make it even easier to find your items. This will be a bigger help when it comes to finding tiny things, such as paper clips, safety pins and the like. It will also keep everyone from throwing things in zones where they don’t belong. Labeling will really go a long way toward making sure the drawer stays organized for a long time to come.

Thank goodness for discovering Art of Drawers! We recently downsized and found ourselves with an itty-bitty pantry and limited cabinet space. After a family referral, we contacted AOD for an estimate. From start to finish, they were completely professional.

We are so pleased to have pantry drawers to fit our needs exactly as wevhad envisioned. Downsizing meant less storage space so it helped tremendously to turn this kitchen pantry under a staircase into pull out drawers. It is still a walk-in pantry too! Thank you and we highly recommend this organizational and storage need to everyone.
