You might have some big ideas when it comes to getting your home’s bathrooms organized. Your kids’ bathrooms might be a cluttered mess, as are the rest of the bathrooms throughout the house. But if you try to tackle everything at once, you might quickly find yourself overwhelmed to the point that you throw your hands up and quit. Why not start small and build up – beginning with your medicine cabinet?
Getting this tiny portion of your bathroom together might give you the motivation you need to take on the bigger projects. It shouldn’t take a lot of time, and it will make it easier for you to get ready every morning.
The experts with Art of Drawers can help you get your bathrooms, as well as every other part of your home, organized in ways you might not have ever considered. Get in touch with us to learn more by calling (770) 800 8410 or contact us online.
Why You Should Keep Your Medicine Cabinet Organized
The bathroom should be a place of joy, a refuge where you can get away from the stresses of everyday life. But if that cluttered medicine cabinet continues to bother you, there’s no way you’re going to be able to relax.
Another big reason to keep your cabinet organized is that you want to be able to find medications, bandages and other first aid items quickly should the need ever arise. There’s nothing much more frustrating than finally locating cough medicine, only to realize that it expired two years ago.
By keeping your medicine cabinet organized, you’ll have peace of mind knowing everything inside will be fresh and ready for use if you ever need it.
Here are five steps to help you do just that.
1: Empty the Space Completely
Just about any kind of home organization project you can think of will start with a thorough decluttering – the bathroom medicine cabinet is no exception. Take each and every item out of the cabinet, and put it in a basket. Keep a separate basket, or a trash bag, nearby.
2: Get Rid of Anything You Don’t Need
Look at every bottle of medicine closely to see if it is expired. If it is, put it in the trash bag. This goes for prescription medicine, over-the-counter medicine, and everything else. Don’t be surprised if you see something that hasn’t been good for several years.
There are a lot of ways you can safely get rid of medications. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA), the labels should tell you whether or not flushing them down the toilet is recommended. Many medications can also be thrown out with your household trash. If you’re not sure, talk to your doctor or your local pharmacist. Your pharmacy may have a drop-off program or mail-back program.
There will probably be a lot of other things in your medicine cabinet that can go as well, such as old hair ties, topical ointments and more. The bottom line is that if it’s expired, or you haven’t used it in a long time, get rid of it. Especially if you don’t plan on using it in the future. If there’s something you think you might use, see if you can find another home for it. This could be somewhere else in the bathroom or elsewhere in your home.
3: Categorize Your Medicine
So, now that you know what medications you’ll be keeping, see if you can attach a dry erase board to the inside of the cabinet door. This can be a great way to remind yourself and others to check the expiration dates and safely toss whatever needs to be tossed. It will also keep clutter to a minimum.
If you take medications on a regular basis, you can keep a pill organizer in the medicine cabinet, and keep the bottles someplace else. Of course, always keep medications out of the reach of children. Also, group any ointments and first-aid supplies together as well. That way, you’ll know when you’re running low on something. The last thing you’ll want is to realize you’re out of bandages after someone has suffered a cut.
4: Use Bins and Labels to Group Items Together
Keep your cough medicine bottles together. Also group prescription medicines, over-the-counter pain relievers, cold and flu medicines, and any children’s medicines if you keep them in your bathroom.
You can use bins and baskets if you don’t have enough room to keep everything in the medicine cabinet. Add labels so everyone can clearly see what’s in each group.
If you have the room, consider keeping toiletries and miscellaneous items together somewhere else in the bathroom. Keep shampoo and other hair care products in one area, body lotions, razors and body powder in another, and so on.
5: Utilize Extra Door Space
A lot of people don’t pay attention to other parts of the medicine cabinet, such as the inside of the door. We already mentioned putting a dry erase board up there to keep track of your medications. But you could also hang up a piece of magnetic sheet metal and attach lists, phone numbers, or even a calendar.
